Western Medicine and the Hindu Culture
In the Hindu religion animals, especially cows, are seen as sacred or as equals and should not be mistreated. This may put a limit on what type of medications a person of Hindu belief would be willing to take. Any medication that has been tested on animals or any medication that contains animals products may not be suitable for this person. Some people of the Hindu faith may be open to taking these medications due to the fact that their religion states that it is their duty to stay healthy, so it is up to the person if they would be willing to use this type of treatment. Alternative medicine, such as acupuncture, acupressure, and meditation are popular resources people of the Hindu religion utilize. While Western medicine is becoming more open to alternative healing mechanisms, these Eastern medicines are still not widely used in traditional medicine.
The use of herbal remedies is another aspect of the Hindu tradition that differs from Western Medicine. For example, the Tulsi plant is a popular plant that the Hindu people will use for illnesses such as the common cold, soar throat, and many respiratory disorders. There is actually a lot of science behind this practice, which is still not known by many Hindu people today. The Tulsi plant releases a plentiful amount of Oxygen, which helps with ecological balance and can help with breathing difficulties and the use of Oxygen within the body. Once again these practices are becoming more prominent throughout the world, but are still not used wide spread. You must attend a specialist who deals with holistic medicine to be able to obtain this type of treatment.
Surgery is something the Hindu religions sees as a fit resource to treat some medical illnesses because surgery will clean the body of any impurities. The body is seen as a temple and it must stay in the best shape possible because it is that person's responsibility. Although surgery is suitable for this group of people, preventative measures are always the first step. Keeping the immune system strong, having a healthy digestive system and proper excretion are important in the Hindu religion. Also, hygiene is something that can never fall by the wayside because hygiene is what keeps everyone healthy. Taking a bath, brushing one's teeth, and skin care are priorities that must happen every day.
